4A Games and Deep Silver have officially revealed Metro 2039, the next mainline entry in the Metro franchise, arriving winter 2026. The game introduces a new protagonist — named The Stranger — who is fully voiced, marking a deliberate break from Artyom’s silent first-person perspective across the previous three games. A new faction called Novoreich also appears in the reveal, hinting at a politically charged conflict that 4A Games says draws direct inspiration from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original Metro novels that the games are based on, is confirmed to be involved in Metro 2039‘s story.

A New Protagonist for the First Time in Three Games

Artyom has been the Moscow metro’s central figure since Metro 2033 (2010), through Metro: Last Light (2013), and into Metro Exodus (February 2019). He was always silent during gameplay, with his character built through written journal entries scattered across the games. The Stranger changes that dynamic completely — a protagonist with a voice, a face, and presumably a named story arc that the player watches unfold rather than inhabits from inside silence.

The practical storytelling implications are significant. A voiced protagonist allows for dialogue, character relationships built in real time, and a narrative structure closer to the approach Glukhovsky used in his novels, where different perspectives illuminate the metro’s world from outside Artyom’s single viewpoint. 4A Games showed they could do this effectively in Metro Exodus’ DLC expansions — The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story both offered non-Artyom perspectives at shorter lengths. Metro 2039 takes it mainline.

What The Stranger’s Reveal Trailer Showed

The reveal sets Metro 2039 within the Moscow metro system, which suffered nuclear devastation above ground. The trailer’s narration takes a spiritual dimension: “It appears that the devastation we brought upon ourselves was complete: Heaven, hell, and purgatory were atomized as well. So, when a soul leaves the body, it has nowhere to go, and must remain here, in the metro.”

The supernatural framing — souls trapped in the metro — suggests a darker tonal direction than Metro Exodus’s relatively grounded open-world road trip. Whether this is literal in-world supernaturalism or metaphor is not yet confirmed.

Novoreich appears as a new faction in the reveal. The name carries obvious real-world weight given the game’s confirmed thematic connection to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine — 4A Games operates from Malta after their Kyiv studio was disrupted in 2022, and the studio has spoken publicly about the impact of the war on the team and their work.

What We Know About Platforms and Pricing

Deep Silver has confirmed a winter 2026 release window. Platform specifics — beyond the expected PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S — have not been detailed. No gameplay footage has been released and a marketing roadmap has not been announced, though a summer 2026 showcase reveal is likely given the release window.

MYR pricing has not been announced. Metro Exodus was priced at RM109 at launch on Steam Malaysia. When Metro 2039’s Steam Malaysia pricing is confirmed, it will be noted here. Regional pricing varies by storefront.

Game Pass inclusion has not been confirmed. Metro Exodus was added to Game Pass after launch rather than on day one, which is the more likely scenario again given the current structure of Microsoft’s subscription tiers.

The SEA PC Angle

The Metro series has built a consistent following among Southeast Asian PC players drawn to atmospheric, narrative-heavy shooters that run well on mid-range hardware. Metro Exodus was optimised for a wide GPU range — relevant in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam where the RTX 3060 and 3070 tier represent the upper end of the installed base rather than the entry point.

4A Games has historically prioritised PC performance optimisation, which matters in a region where the console-to-PC split skews more heavily toward PC than in Western markets. Metro 2039’s confirmed PC platform keeps it accessible to that audience.

The Novoreich faction and the Ukraine-war thematic framing may resonate differently across SEA markets with varying relationships to Russian cultural exports. The Metro series has maintained popularity in SEA despite — or because of — its distinctly post-Soviet atmosphere. Whether Glukhovsky’s involvement sharpens or softens the political angle will emerge when more story details are released.

What Comes Next for Metro 2039

A winter 2026 launch with no gameplay footage as of mid-April means the full reveal is likely within weeks, not months. Summer showcase season — June to August — is the expected window. Deep Silver’s previous Metro marketing has used dedicated trailers and Xbox partnership announcements. Watch the 4A Games and Deep Silver official channels for the next update.
