Capcom has released a Street Fighter 6 patch altering Alex backstory, specifically the characterisation of his relationship with Patricia. Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama issued a public apology and committed to revising misleading text passages. The April 15, 2026 patch is that revision.
What the Patch Changed
Alex World Tour dialogue previously described Tom as a cousin of my mom. It now reads a distant relative of my mom or something. It is a lore edit, not a gameplay patch. Alex moveset, frame data, and competitive viability are unchanged.
Community Reaction
The fighting game community response has been sceptical. The consensus is that the patch is more of a PR move than a meaningful correction. The underlying relationship dynamic is still there.
For competitive players and the SEA fighting game scene, the patch has no bearing on matchplay. Alex remains the same character in ranked and tournament contexts.
Why Capcom Made This Change
Nakayama addressed the situation in March 2026, posting on X that while Capcom had not changed the backstories, the team planned to revise misleading text passages. Alex debuted in Street Fighter 3: New Generation in 1997.
Street Fighter 6 has continued strong engagement in the SEA region, particularly in the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
What This Means Going Forward
The patch does not affect Street Fighter 6 in any way that matters for players who engage competitively or casually. Capcom has not announced whether further lore revisions are planned.
