GTA 5 Leaves Xbox Game Pass Again on April 15 — The Cycle Continues

Grand Theft Auto V is leaving Xbox Game Pass on April 15. If this sounds familiar, it should. GTA 5 has now been added and removed from Microsoft’s subscription service multiple times, making it one of the most reliably frustrating examples of how Game Pass catalogues shift under subscribers.

The April 15 Exit Date

Xbox Game Pass subscribers have until April 15, 2026 to play Grand Theft Auto V through the subscription before it’s removed. After that date, players who want access will need to purchase the game outright or wait for its next return to the catalogue — which, based on the pattern, may eventually happen.

Microsoft has not announced a specific reason for this removal cycle, which is standard — publishers and Microsoft negotiate licensing windows and rarely comment on the business terms publicly.

A Frustrating On-Again, Off-Again History

GTA 5 first landed on Game Pass in 2021 and has cycled in and out since then. Polygon characterises the pattern as one of the more frustrating recurring examples of the subscription model’s instability — a game that is both one of the best-selling titles in history and one that publishers clearly have complicated feelings about giving away as part of a monthly fee.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have managed GTA 5’s commercial life with more precision than almost any other publisher: the game launched in 2013, received a PS4/Xbox One port in 2014, a PS5/Xbox Series X upgrade in 2022, and has maintained active sales throughout. GTA Online, the game’s multiplayer component, continues generating significant revenue. Every month GTA 5 sits on Game Pass is a month it might have sold as a standalone purchase.

What SEA Game Pass Subscribers Should Do

Xbox Game Pass has solid subscription numbers across Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines where the value proposition of access to a large library at a fixed monthly cost resonates strongly.

If you have Game Pass and haven’t played GTA 5 yet, April 15 is your deadline. The game includes both the main story campaign — which holds up well in 2026, particularly the three-protagonist structure — and access to GTA Online.

For returning players, GTA Online’s Expanded and Enhanced version on current-gen offers improved visuals and frame rates. Whether it’s worth revisiting before the deadline depends on how much of the online content you’ve left unfinished.

GTA 6 Is Still Coming

The obvious context for everything GTA-related in 2026 is that GTA 6 is still without a confirmed release date after Rockstar pushed back its original 2025 window. With GTA 5 cycling off Game Pass again, Take-Two and Rockstar retain full commercial control over the franchise’s current income stream while the sequel remains in development. That’s not a coincidence.

Players wanting to catch up on GTA 5’s story before the sequel arrives have until April 15 to do so through Game Pass.
