HoYoverse dropped the Version 4.2 Special Program on April 10, kicking off the countdown to the biggest update in Honkai: Star Rail history. Version 4.2, titled So Laughed the Masses, launches on April 21, 2026 for NA servers and April 22 for Asia and EU — and it’s bringing two new five-star characters, a brand-new Trailblaze Mission set in Seafeld City, the game’s third anniversary celebrations, and the first look at a full anime adaptation.
What Version 4.2 Contains
This isn’t a filler patch. Three new playable characters, two new maps, a new story mission, and anniversary events all land together — plus an anime announcement that nobody had on their bingo card.
Silver Wolf Lv.999
Silver Wolf returns in a reimagined form as Silver Wolf Lv.999, a five-star Imaginary character following the Path of Elation. Her kit revolves around a “Reward stage” system that lets her manipulate the battlefield through combat hacks. She’s the Phase 1 banner pick, running from April 21 to May 13, 2026, with Castorice, Firefly, and The Dahlia on rerun alongside her. Her signature Light Cone is Welcome to the Cosmic City.
Evanescia
Evanescia is a fresh five-star Physical unit on the Path of Elation. Her design draws clear visual parallels to Yae Sakura from Honkai Impact 3rd — sakura aesthetic, follow-up strike gameplay, and strong synergy with Yao Guang. She lands in Phase 2 from May 13 to June 1, 2026, with Tribbie, Sunday, and Feixiao on rerun. Her featured four-stars are Guinaifen, Lynx, and Sushang. Her signature Light Cone is Until the Flowers Bloom Again.
Elation Trailblazer
The Trailblazer gets a new form tied to the 4.2 Trailblaze Mission — a Lightning element build following the Path of Elation. It unlocks automatically after progressing through the story, meaning it’s free for everyone.
The Story: Seafeld City and the Phantasmoon Games
So Laughed the Masses continues the Planarcadia arc. The character Fulwish invites all Supplicants to the newly added Seafeld City — one of two new maps alongside the Seafeld TV Tower — where a televised public debate breaks out over what the Phantasmoon Games’ ultimate prize actually means for the world. The stakes are higher than previous chapters: the reward on the table is becoming the permanent Aeon of Elation.
What SEA Players Should Know: Third Anniversary Rewards
The Third Anniversary kicks off during Phase 1 alongside the 4.2 launch. Log in on April 26, 2026 (Anniversary Day) to claim 1,600 Stellar Jade and 10 Fuel just for logging in.
The full anniversary reward pool includes:
– 20 free pulls
– Additional Stellar Jade giveaways across events
– A free character redemption
– Triple drops from Caverns of Corrosion, Simulated Universe, and Calyxes via Planar Fissure 300%, Realm of the Strange 300%, and Garden of Plenty 300% boosts
The new Cosmic Data Roaming event lets you build an in-game streamer career by recording your best combat clips — it’s the kind of meta-event that pairs well with the game’s actual streaming audience in SEA.
For players managing their Jade budget: Silver Wolf Lv.999 is an Elation-path character who synergises with the patch’s new units, making her the stronger pull if you’re building for the current meta. Evanescia is a strong standalone DPS, but her value depends on whether you have Yao Guang.
Four existing characters — Firefly, Huohuo, Seele, and Welt — are also receiving buffs in 4.2 via the Novaflare system, which helps if you’ve been sitting on undertuned versions of any of them.
The Anime Announcement
At the end of the Special Program, HoYoverse and MAPPA premiered the concept trailer Death in the Afternoon — the first look at an original Honkai: Star Rail animation. MAPPA’s involvement (the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man) signals this isn’t a short promotional clip. Full details on the series are still to come.
