What’s new in Marathon Update 1.0.0.4 (at a glance)
Bungie has shipped Marathon Update 1.0.0.4, a rapid post-launch balance and stability pass that makes thermal scopes less oppressive, dials back UESC enemy durability, and boosts early-game resources—especially on Perimeter. The update also rolls in multiple bug fixes (including a rare instant-death issue) and a handful of contract and zone tweaks.
Update 1.0.0.4 is largely about smoothing out the first week’s pain points: visibility dominance from thermals, the resource drain of PvE firefights, and stability/UX issues that can derail runs. Key areas Bungie touched:
- Weapons: thermal scope clarity and highlight ranges reduced; Overrun ammo capacity increased
- PvE balance: ~10–15% health reduction to most UESC enemies; 25% shield HP reduction to UESC bosses
- Economy: more Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates on Perimeter; more starting ammo in free Sponsored Kits
- Rook (Runner) quality-of-life: exfil bugs fixed; reputation gains increased; WSTR shotgun now “Compromised”
- Bug fixes and stability: instant-death fix, audio range improvements, crash fixes, map-load black screen fix
Thermal scope nerfs: shorter highlight ranges (especially for snipers)
The headline balance change is a thermal scope pass that reduces how easily players can identify targets at range. Bungie says it has reduced visual clarity on targets with thermal scopes and has also cut the maximum distance at which enemies are highlighted.
Here are the new highlight limits by weapon class:
| Weapon class | Old max highlight distance | New max highlight distance | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pistols | 55m | 40m | -27% |
| Rifles / LMGs / SMGs | 65m | 60m | -8% |
| Precision Rifles | 100m | 80m | -20% |
| Snipers | 180m | 100m | -44% |
Why it matters: the sniper nerf is the big one. At 100m+, you’ll lose the “easy mode” thermal highlight and have to rely on traditional optics, better positioning, or closer angles—meaning long-range overwatch is still viable, but less automated.
For players who leaned on thermals for safe scouting rather than finishing fights, these range cuts also reduce how often you can “pre-clear” rotations from far outside a contested area.
UESC enemy changes: less bullet sponge, same intent
On the PvE side, Bungie reduced the durability of UESC combatants:
- Most UESC enemies: health reduced by ~10–15%
- UESC bosses: shield HP reduced by 25%
- UESC Grenadiers: drop EMP grenades less frequently
Bungie’s stated goal is to ease the “resource burden” in both Solos and Crews—so “bullets and meds go further”—without removing the “friction” players expect from UESC fights. In practical terms, that means fewer encounters that snowball into ammo starvation, especially when you’re forced to clear AI before dealing with another crew.
There’s also a targeted difficulty tweak in the new Traxus contract (more on that below).
Rook runner changes: exfil fixes, rep boosts, and a new risk on the shotgun
Rook-focused players get a mix of bug fixes and progression improvements, plus a new extraction wrinkle:
- Fixed an issue where backpacks could be deleted when exfiling with Rook
- Fixed Rook’s position not displaying on the map screen
- Increased CyAc reputation gain from exfilling with Rook
- Rook now receives the same faction reputation bonus that solo players get
- Rook’s WSTR shotgun now spawns as “Compromised”
That last bullet is the behavioral change: Compromised items require a Matter Fixative during the run to extract with the item. If you were previously treating Rook’s WSTR as a “free” power spike, you’ll now need to plan for the additional risk and inventory cost.
Resource economy improvements: Perimeter gets more sustain
Bungie’s economy adjustments are aimed squarely at early-run viability:
- Perimeter: increased the number of Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates that can spawn
- Free Sponsored Kits (MIDA, CyberAcme, Arachne): increased starting ammo
- Overrun: increased default ammo capacity by +5
This pairs directly with the UESC health reductions: shorter PvE time-to-kill plus more sustain should reduce the feeling that you’re forced into conservative play simply because you can’t afford to shoot.
Contracts and zones: new contracts and an Outpost route is temporarily disabled
Update 1.0.0.4 includes several objective and map-flow tweaks:
- Objective nav points now appear from 20m (up from 10m)
- Introducing NuCaloric Contract: fixes an issue where enemy crews could receive NuCal contract VO audio and subtitles from far away
- Introducing Traxus Contract: reduced the difficulty of the UESC Commander encounter
- Outpost: Bungie has temporarily disabled switch access to the Broken Wing route to Pinwheel, saying it “trivializes” entrance and will be tuned to better match risk/reward
If you’ve been routing through Broken Wing to get “silent” access, expect your usual pathing to change until Bungie re-enables that entrance with adjustments.
Combat fixes, stability, and quality-of-life
Beyond balance, Bungie addressed several issues that can meaningfully impact match outcomes:
- Fixed a bug where players could sometimes die instantly when stepping on certain world geometry
- Fixed shield break screen effects constantly playing when heal-over-time and damage-over-time overlapped
- Increased the range gunfire and explosions can be heard from
- Fixed a rare issue causing dedicated server crashes and several client crashes
- Fixed Text Chat getting stuck open; adjusted IME keyboard location and addressed IME-related crashes
- Players should no longer see an extended black screen during the map load sequence
- Fixed doors locking that prevented completion of the new player intro mission
What this patch likely means for the meta
A few early takeaways for Solos and Crews adapting to the new patch:
- Long-range thermal sniping is still a thing—but it’s not as “set and forget.” If your playstyle depended on 150m+ thermal highlighting, you’ll need to swap optics or take closer angles.
- PvE is less punishing on your inventory. Between UESC durability reductions, fewer EMP drops, more Perimeter supplies, and extra kit ammo, it’s easier to keep momentum without constantly disengaging to restock.
- Rook runs require more planning. The Compromised WSTR means you can’t treat it as guaranteed loot; build your exfil plan around whether you can safely use a Matter Fixative.

Marathon Update 1.0.0.4 is a clear signal that Bungie wants to iterate quickly—tightening visibility tools, reducing PvE resource drain, and cleaning up technical issues that can sabotage a run. If you’ve been frustrated by thermal dominance or early-game scarcity, this patch is designed to make fights fairer without flattening the game’s challenge curve.
