Pocketpair Is Not Interested in Building a Palworld Media Empire

Pocketpair has stated that despite multiple spin-offs in development, the studio is not aiming to build a broad Palworld media empire. The statement comes from John ‘Bucky’ Buckley, Pocketpair’s head of publishing and communications.

“We have no desire to be a media empire,” Buckley told GamesRadar, adding that while Pocketpair would be “stupid to let the survival game die out,” franchise machinery is not the goal.

The comment tempers expectations that Palworld’s explosive early access launch — which peaked at 2.1 million concurrent players on Steam in January 2024, making it one of the fastest games to reach that figure in Steam history (SteamDB, 2024) — was the beginning of a full franchise expansion strategy.

What Pocketpair Said About Palworld’s Future

According to Buckley, the spin-offs announced around Palworld are driven by specific creative opportunities rather than a systematic plan to replicate the IP across every available media format. Pocketpair is not pursuing the kind of franchise machinery that turns a game into an anime, a trading card game, a theme park attraction, and a streaming series simultaneously.

The framing is explicit: creative-driven projects exist; a media empire strategy does not.

The Spin-offs That Do Exist

Pocketpair has announced spin-off content for Palworld. Buckley’s position is that these projects exist on their own merits, not as components of a coordinated franchise expansion plan. This is a meaningful distinction from how Nintendo manages Pokémon — a brand that has generated trading cards, animated series, films, theme park rides, and merchandise across decades — or how Tencent manages its IP portfolio.

Why This Matters: The Post-Viral Game Problem

Palworld’s launch trajectory is one of the more remarkable in recent gaming history. The game sold over 8 million copies in the first three days of early access (Pocketpair, January 2024), generating cultural momentum that typically pushes studios toward aggressive brand expansion.

Pocketpair is explicitly saying it does not want to follow that path. The media empire model is not neutral — it requires infrastructure, creative bandwidth, and external partnerships that fundamentally change how a studio operates. Pocketpair appears to be prioritising keeping Palworld itself healthy over extracting maximum value from the IP across formats.

What This Means for Palworld Players

The practical implication is that Palworld’s future development focus stays on the game rather than being diffused across licensed merchandise, animated series development, and mobile ports designed primarily to monetise brand recognition.

For the player base — significant, though concurrent Steam figures have normalised substantially from the January 2024 peak — this means continued content updates and the announced spin-offs are the primary touchpoints. Palworld entered 1.0 full release in December 2024 following its early access period.

SEA Players and Palworld’s Mobile Prospects

Palworld’s survival crafting loop has strong appeal for SEA players who engage with titles like ARK: Survival Evolved and Craftopia. A mobile version has not been formally announced by Pocketpair, and given Buckley’s stated reluctance toward media empire building, the timeline for any mobile port — if it comes at all — is not clear.

What Comes Next

Pocketpair is continuing to develop Palworld with planned content updates and the announced spin-off projects. The Nintendo lawsuit filed in September 2024 over alleged patent infringement remains an ongoing legal matter.
