Pokemon Champions Will Keep Expanding — Producer Hints at “Maybe 10,000 Pokémon” Long-Term
Pokemon Champions will use a rotating roster from day one, with producer Masaaki Hoshino confirming the game is designed to run “basically forever” — and that the franchise’s species count could eventually hit 10,000.
The Franchise Now Has 1,025 Species — and Is Still Growing
The Pokemon franchise crossed the 1,025-species mark with the three new starters announced for Pokemon Winds and Waves on Nintendo Switch 2. That’s after 26 years and roughly 100 new Pokemon added per generation.
Hoshino told press in a group interview attended by GamesRadar+: “We’re planning to keep Pokémon Champions going far into the future – basically forever, as long as the Pokémon series is continuing. And who knows? Far in the future, we’ll have 2,000, 3,000, maybe 10,000 Pokémon.”
That’s a striking number. At the current pace, hitting 10,000 would take centuries. But it signals something important: Pokemon Champions is being built for long-term operation, not a fixed lifecycle.
Why a Rotating Roster Makes Sense
With over a thousand species already in play, letting every Pokemon be available simultaneously would make competitive play extremely hard to balance. Hoshino acknowledged this directly: “If we had all of those available to be played, I think it would just become such a complicated situation.”
The rotating selection approach means:
Meta Management Without Hard Bans
Available Pokemon will shift over time. This is closer to how card games like the Pokemon TCG itself handles formats — Standard vs Expanded — than how mainline games manage their National Dex. Players will need to adapt their teams as the selection changes.
Replaces Scarlet and Violet at World Championships
Pokemon Champions will replace Scarlet and Violet at the Pokemon World Championships going forward. That’s a significant structural shift — this isn’t a casual spin-off. Competitive players should pay close attention to how the rotation system develops.
Launch Details SEA Players Need to Know
Pokemon Champions launches April 8 on Nintendo Switch. A smartphone release is planned for later in 2026 — no specific date given yet.

What Comes Next
The rotating roster system will be watched closely by the competitive community. How frequently Pokemon cycle in and out, whether fan favourites get locked out of major events, and how the smartphone version integrates with the Switch version are all open questions.
If you’re a competitive Pokemon player in SEA, April 8 is the date to mark. Whether you’re a day-one Switch player or waiting for mobile, the meta conversation starts now.
